BBC News Online take major honours in EOJ awards

London, 4 July: Journalists from BBC News Online emerged the biggest
winners in this year's European Online Journalism Awards, capturing eight
of the 17 prizes on offer. Elmundo.es of Spain won in three categories.

This years' competition, which was audited by the Audit Bureau of
Circulation's electronic division, attracted a record number of entries
(875), double the total for 2001. Entries were received from 24 European
countries.

The most coveted award, the Internet Journalist of the Year, was won by Dr
David Whitehouse, science editor of BBC News Online. Runner-up was Galima
Bukharbaeva of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting.

Best Overall Journalism Service was  "Hold the Front Page",  Northcliffe
Electronic Publishing's online news service for UK regional journalists.

Football entries featured strongly in this year of the World Cup and were
winners in two categories: Best News Design and Navigation ("Korea-Japan
2002 Football World Championship") and Sports ("Elmundodeporte.com"), both
from Elmundo.es of Spain.

This year's award ceremony was dedicated to US web journalists for the
sterling work they did after the events of 11 September.

1. This is the fourth year of the EOJ Awards. They began in 1999 as an
outgrowth of the annual NetMedia conference on the media and the Internet.
They were the first awards to honour the work of online journalists. The
aim of the awards is to contribute to the creation and dissemination of
models of excellence and best practice in doing journalism on the Web.
